Bromley Guitar Meeting 19th January

My thanks to Denis for the following report:

After the interval, contributions came from Marion Davis, Len Ivell, Tom Rimmer, Trevor Pike, Jenny Wormald and Dave Hampton. Tom Rimmer and Richard Frenkel also played a couple of duets. This most welcome abundance of individual playing meant that the remaining session of ensemble music was confined to the final twenty minutes of the meeting.

However, taken together with the first half of the meeting, Ray Butcher did a sterling job and ensured that we all really enjoyed ourselves. There is no doubt that Ray has a flair for leading ensembles, and the banter that always ensues, ensures that none of the ensemble members ever feel conspicuous.

Musical Iconography, Law, and the Origins of Civilization in Early Modern Political Culture

Abstract
This paper will make a contribution to the study of musical iconography in relation to the history of political thought. I will depart from ancient Greek political texts, which describe music as a paradigm of the cosmos. String instruments are one of the most frequently used - but least studied - metaphors of power in early modern Western culture: the seven-string lyre in particular appears as an emblem of the harmony of the seven planets, being also an appropriate metaphor of the laws that rule the microcosm of the city-State. I will also draw on Biblical testimonies, which present King David as a zither- or harp player as well as a fair ruler, whereas in Revelation, chordophones refer to the Kingdom of God, to the New World, represented by the Celestial Jerusalem after the last victory over Satan and the Last Judgment. Both traditions converge in the fact that in the first centuries of the Christian era Jesus was often perceived and represented as the logos, the cosmic power of harmony, and authors like St Augustine establish a comparison between the ten-stringed psaltery mentioned in the Psalms and the Ten Commandments which will be transmitted through the medieval period.

My paper will analyze the impact of these sources in early modern identifications of law with music, from Jean Bodin's idea of harmonic justice in The Six Books on the Commonwealth (1575) to political emblems dedicated to the legendary characters Amphion and Orpheus (interpreted from the Christian point of view) and based on the magic power of music as a tool of civilization. I intend to locate the musical iconography of law in the wider panorama of the origins of the modern State, when ruling becomes an art, a techne, which the prince has to develop in order to create social harmony.
