|Saturday Meeting 21st June 2008

A great evening was enjoyed by all...with the exception of your correspondent who unfortunately couldn't attend.

However I am extremely grateful to Denis for his summary

The first part of the evening was taken by Ray Butcher, who rehearsed some of the music for the July meeting. This was a very intensive session and went right up to the 8.00 pm refreshment break.

From 8.20 pm to 9.00 pm there were individual items, which included two excellent debuts by new members who play to a very high standard indeed.
  • Dave Hampton played
Sarabande and Double from J S Bachs Partita No. 1 (BWV 1002) for Violin

  • Steve Pearson played Bach's Prelude in D from the first 'cello suite.

  • William Punter played the middle movement of El Decameron Negro by Leo Brouwer. A fine debut performance.

  • Len Ivell played When I Fall in Love and Send in The Clowns.

  • Tom Rimmer and Chris Wright (from Wealden) played two duets:- Minuet in G by Bach and Rondo from The Fairy Queen by Purcell.

  • Jenny Wormald played Impromptu by Peter Nuttall.

  • Wendy Ward and Marion Davis played a duet version of Ashokan Farewell.

  • Marion then played a solo minuet by Brescianello.

  • Rebecca Clifford played the first part of La Catedral by Barrios. A fine debut performance.
From 9.00 pm to 9.30 pm Ray ran a further ensemble session, culminating with a hilarious version of Ain't Misbehavin'.
I am indebted to Vince Chittenden and Steve Pearson for recording the performances. Click the link to listen to them
No photos this time....probably just as well!

News from the Lute Society

1. CONGRATULATIONS LIZ!

Liz Kenny's playing on the BBC's 'Supersizers go . . . Elizabethan' on Tuesday night prompted a remark from the normally cynical Sue Perkins that 'the lute is genius!' which can't do any harm. You can catch the programme via the BBC iplayer I believe, if you missed it.

2. IN OUR TIME

Today's Radio 4 In our time programme is on the music of the spheres - repeated again tonight on Radio 4, and available for the next week via the listen again feature of the website.

3. CONCERTS IN THE KINGSTON EARLY MUSIC FESTIVAL
Dear early music fan,
I am writing to tell you about three forthcoming concerts promoted by Loki Music.

The first will take place this week in The Lovekyn Chapel, London Road [opposite Kingston Grammar School], Kingston on Thursday 19th. June. The music comes from 18th.-century France - a world beautifully evoked by the film 'Tous les matins du monde' - and will be performed on two sonorous bass viols [played by Alison Crum and Mary Pells] and accompanied by Theorbo [a bass lute, played by Roy Marks]. Composers featured will include Marais, Couperin and St Colombe.

The second falls on Wednesday 9th. July in St John the Divine Church, Kew Road, Richmond [near the railway station] and will feature The Loki Consort performing songs, airs, ballads and poetry from the Elizabethan court, using a mixture of instruments with voice. The programme - 'Care, Charming Sleep' - recently gained a very favourable reception in The Dulwich Festival, and the ensemble is now involved in working with dancers and educationalists.

The third will take place on Friday 18th. July in St John the Divine, and will feature the engaging trio Pantagruel performing English and Scottish 17th.-century songs and airs at the start of their English tour. These German-based musicians will shortly be recording this programme - Ladie Louthian's Lilt' - for Naxos Records.

All three concerts will start at 7.45pm. Tickets will cost #8; #6 [concessions] or nothing [children aged 16 or under] and refreshments will be served.

A general aim within Loki Music concerts is to restore the friendliness, sense of involvement and debate to early music which occurs in other areas of musical and cultural life. To this end, musicians will introduce themselves, their instruments and the music and will converse with the audience when appropriate; detailed programme notes, reviews and articles of interest will be available online or through our newsletter; and the overall programming will include students, children and a wide range of historically- informed music.

Please pass on this e-mail to anyone who may be interested, and contact me for any enquiries. Please also contact us if your details have changed.

Finally, please let me know if this information is not of interest to you and I will remove your details from the mailing list immediately.

With best wishes,
William Summers.

Hi All,

I wanted to let you know that I am back performing again after an 18 month break. Many of you know that I have been suffering from the disabling condition focal dystonia for a number of years now. Towards the end of 2006 I took the decision to stop performing completely, which was incredibly difficult as things were going so well. I know now that it was the right decision to make as I was able to fully concentrate on re-training my right hand.

I worked very closely with Hand Specialist Katherine Butler in London who gave me a programme of sensory re-training (involving gloves, dominoes, splints and tape!) and to my great relief I was back playing without any FD within a matter of months. This year I have started performing a few informal concerts and recording and I am pleased to say that none of the old 'feelings' have returned.

If you have any students or know any musician who might be suffering from this condition feel free to get in contact with me and I can send them in the right direction. I will also put Katherine Butlers essays on Focal Dystonia on my website which describes Focal Dystonia in great detail and all the re-training programmes.

I am now back on the so called treadmill of concerts and am currently taking bookings for 2009-10.

You can see me playing on my new Christopher Dean guitar FD free on youtube. Just click on the links below or go to my website http://www.blogger.com/www.markashford.com and follow the links on the news section of my homepage.
