Performer Spotlight: Sharon Wayne

Learning about an accomplished and talented performer like Sharon Wayne was a journey in itself.

It first started when I was doing a search on Youtube for performances of Bogdanovich's 'Mysterious Habitats ' after listening to Amanda Cook's rendition of this piece at the BGS concert in October. (And I can say that after listening and watching other guitarists' performing this wonderful piece, Amanda's is still the best version I have heard to date. Amanda, if you read this entry, this blog site would welcome an mp3 track of your rendition.....)

But I digress...

After purchasing the sheet music for 'Mysterious Habitats' I learned that Bogdanovich had dedicated this piece to Sharon who studied and performed with him. This, indeed, was a lady worth getting to know!
Another search on Youtube came up with this video below where she is playing one of Bogdanovich's Jazz Sonata. And what a performance it is..

Her web site gives a brief outline of her music career which includes performances of works by Carlo Domeniconi and Eita Steinberg. She is currently Artistic Director at the Boston Classical Guitar Society with a formidable range of music concerts and recordings. The site doesn't provide much information beyond 2003 which is a shame. Still the world has enough web developers- talented artists like Sharon are much more rarer!!
What do you think? Has anyone out there heard of Sharon Wayne? Or been to any concerts she has presented?

News from the Lute Society

1. NEXT LUTE SOCIETY MEETING

If you happen to be in London this Saturday 22nd of November do come to the next meeting of the Lute Society. This time we are at the Swedenborg Hall, 20-21 Bloomsbury Way, London, WC1A 2TH, near The Art Workers Guild where we used to meet, and near Holborn tube station. No need to book - just turn up!

The November meeting is themed (after a fashion!) around re-invention and rediscovery; the very old and the very new, with a talk and performances by a reconstructed lute quartet, a talk and performances of old ballads set to Dowland songs, and some newly discovered pairings of 16th century words and music, and the ‘christening’ of a mediaeval lute and gittern newly made by David van Edwards and his students. We also once again welcome Yair Avidor who will give a short recital on baroque lute.

BGS Meeting 15th November

Another great turn out tonight at St Marks in Bromley. It was great to have Dennis back in charge of the proceedings!

We had a great evening of ensemble practice, working on Mr Witt's Suite in G, ably led by our concert master Ray Butcher, who battled flu and traffic to join us. Fortunately for us, Mr Witt has been dead since 1716, so he was in no position to comment or judge our performance. However, as it was our first attempt, I thought he would be pleased. Or he may be turning in his grave- well either way he would be getting some exercise!

At least,we have plenty of time to get it right before the Federation Of Guitar Society Meeting hosted by Enfield next year.

(The dates and information about this event will be posted on the blog so watch this space...)

As usual, we had some time for some terrific solo performances as outlined below:

  • Wisteria (David Cotton) performed by Jenny Wormald
  • Cavatina (Stanley Myers) and Etude 1 (Villa Lobos) performed by Dave Hampton
  • Allemande (Bach) performed by Tom Paige
  • Folk Tune' My Love is like a Red Rose' performed by Trevor Pike
  • Bouree in E minor (Bach) and Guardarme Las Vacas (Naravaez) performed by Mike Gerrard

And a couple of flamenco pieces -Auralami (Bernabe de Moron) and a brave stab at a Bulerias (Broken Bulerias) which outrageously 'borrowed ' tocques from Juan Martin, Paco De Lucia and Paco Pena -performed by your humble correspondent!!

Sound files will be updated on the site when Vince Chittenden has worked his magic with his sound recording pixies! For which, he has our thanks.

Update: Sound files have been added-Click here to listen..

And a special thanks as always to Trevor Pike for catering organisation and to Ray for organising and leading the ensemble!

Another evening of lost chords, laughter and I learned that 'writs'(??? hope I have the spelling right) are more than just legal terms...

News about the Christmas meeting will appear on the blog site with Shirley taking up the reins in my absence as I will be heading back to Australia for a few weeks.
