Nine members attended our meeting on 1st July which started with an exchange of impressions of the Federation Day on June 25. The previous weekend, at the annual meeting of the Federation of Guitar Societies (colloquially known as
FGS Day) our society had joined with six others to form an orchestra of about seventy players. This event was held at the marvellous Kinson Community Centre in Bournemouth, The two main ensemble pieces for the day were
Moin Moin by
N Koshkin and
Serenade Opus 44 by
Antonin Dvorak [arranged by
Andrew Forrest] which we had practised at our previous meeting. During the afternoon, each Society played their own pieces – ours were Tangomania by John R Knox, and Waltz for Debbie by Bill Evans. The day finished with performances of the two ensemble pieces.
Our first meeting in July started with the gentle lullaby
Berceuse from
Gabriel Faure’s Dolly Suite Opus 56/1. We were guided by John working on dynamics and phrasing, but before we fell asleep it was time for Trevor to rouse us with his refreshments in the break. After that we sat back and listened to this evening's solo performances:
Eduardo | Venuzuelan Waltz (Gonzalez) |
Shaun | Wave (Antonio Carlos Jobim) |
Toby | Melancholy Galliard (John Dowland)
Elabejorro (Emilio Pujol) |
To finish the evening, John introduced us to an arrangement by Mark Houghton of Eine Kliene Nachtmusik by W A Mozart, a familiar tune but not easy to sight-read first time around.
